Toronto’s Worst Offenders

No one should face the threat of eviction for being unable to pay the rent during a pandemic and no one should be made to worry about being forced out of their home during a stay-at-home order, and yet these landlords chose to do just that to tenants, over and over again. While we can’t say for certain if these landlords were the most successful in evicting tenants (the LTB does not keep track of their own eviction orders) we do know these landlords tried. The following landlords have been some of the most prolific when it comes to taking tenants to the Landlord Tenant Board during the cold months of November and December 2020 and January 2021, during record cases of COVID-19 in the province’s biggest city.

Below are the landlords who had the highest number of eviction hearings in the GTA during the LTB’s online eviction “blitz” in November and December 2020 and January 2021.

Map of scheduled eviction hearings in Toronto from Nov. 2 to Jan. 31

Landlord Tenant Board eviction hearings scheduled for Toronto tenants, Nov. 2 2020 - Jan 31, 2021

About the data and map: This information is based on the 3,500 scheduled Landlord Tenant Board hearings in Toronto from Nov. 2, 2020 to Jan. 31, 2021. While some of these hearings were filed pre-pandemic, many of these hearings were used to order evictions against tenants who fell behind on rent during the pandemic. The LTB does not keep track of how many evictions it orders nor how many of those result in eviction enforcement, so this was the most accurate way to track COVID evictions. Landlord information was sourced through the most up-date information available to the public. Final tallies may not reflect all cases where smaller holding companies are owned by larger conglomerates, and may not reflect a recent change in ownership.
